Should you feed an axolotl live or frozen food? This is a question many owners ask themselves. Both options are possible, but each has its advantages and risks. The key is to adapt the type of food to the size, age, and needs of your axolotl.
Axolotls are opportunistic carnivores. In the wild, they feed mainly on small worms, insects, larvae, and crustaceans. In captivity, they need a high-protein diet that is low in fat. The goal is to replicate its natural diet as closely as possible without upsetting the water quality.
Live prey stimulates the axolotl’s hunting instinct. Seeing its food move encourages it to feed, especially if it is young or shy.
The most commonly used are:
Live food provides better stimulation and promotes growth, but it requires some precautions: some prey can carry bacteria or pollute the water if not consumed quickly.
Frozen food remains the simplest solution for most owners. It is convenient, clean, and safe, provided it is stored properly and thawed before feeding.
The most common foods are:
This avoids the health risks associated with live prey and allows for better control of quantities. On the other hand, it does less to stimulate the axolotl’s natural hunting behavior.
Never feed your axolotl raw food straight from the supermarket (chicken, red meat, unrinsed fish): it may contain harmful bacteria or additives.
Also avoid foods that are too fatty or rich in organic waste, as these clog the filter and increase nitrate levels.
The best approach is often a mixture of both types of food: live food for stimulation and nutrition, and frozen food for regularity and safety.
For example:
You can also occasionally supplement with axolotl pellets if your pet accepts them, but this should not be the basis of its diet.
Live food is more natural and stimulating for axolotls, but frozen food is more practical and hygienic.
The ideal solution is to alternate between the two according to your schedule and the season, while ensuring the water quality after each meal.
