What size aquarium is needed for two axolotls?

It is possible to keep two axolotls in the same aquarium, but only if there is enough space. These amphibians are calm but territorial: they need room to move around and avoid stress. An aquarium that is too small can quickly become a source of injury or aggression.

The minimum recommended volume

For a single axolotl, we recommend an aquarium that is at least 80 cm long and holds approximately 100 liters of water. If you want to keep two, you will need to significantly increase the floor space.

👉 The absolute minimum for two axolotls is a tank 120 cm long, or approximately 150 to 180 liters of water. Ideally, aim for a larger tank (up to 200 L) to ensure the comfort of both individuals.

Why the size of the tank is so important

Axolotls are not fish: they do not move around much, but they need a large floor space to avoid conflicts. A tank that is too small encourages biting of the gills or legs, especially during meals.

A sufficient volume also helps to stabilize water parameters: temperature, nitrates, and oxygen vary less in a large tank, which reduces the risk of disease.

The basic rule

It is estimated that at least 80 to 100 liters per axolotl is required. This simple calculation helps you determine the ideal size based on the number of individuals:

  • 1 axolotl → 100 L minimum
  • 2 axolotls → 150–200 L minimum
  • 3 axolotls → 250 L or more

But beyond volume, the shape of the tank is also very important: choose a long, shallow tank rather than a tall, narrow aquarium. Axolotls mainly live at the bottom.

Setup for two axolotls

If you want to avoid tension, organize the tank into separate areas:

  • Add several hiding places (caves, roots, pots, dense plants).
  • Create shaded areas and resting places at each end.
  • Avoid strong filter currents: too powerful a flow will stress them out.
  • Keep the water between 16 °C and 18 °C.

You can also add a slight slope or a root to break the line of sight between them, which reduces aggressive behavior.

What if you want a pair?

If you plan to keep a male and female together, make sure they are adults and in good health. During the breeding season, the male can be persistent, which is why it is important to provide a large space and plenty of hiding places.

Conclusion

For two axolotls, an aquarium of at least 150 liters and 120 cm long is essential. This will ensure peaceful cohabitation, stable water conditions, and healthy animals. It is better to invest in a large tank from the outset than to have to separate your axolotls later on.
